Ten Years of Spruce: The Beginning

To celebrate Spruce Body Lab’s 10 year anniversary, we wanted to share some of our most memorable stories from those uncertain first days and from the past decade.

spruce body lab anniversary - mark and ryanRyan Seitz tells us about some of his memories of Spruce:

“The first day that we were open for business was June 5 2005.  There was a huge level of fear and uncertainty, that I had never experienced before. It was our baby and we were sharing it with the world for the first time. Mark and I were working 15 hour days and obsessed about the business, its all we talked about. We had never done anything like this before and there was a lot of learning. We made so many mistakes back then OMG! It’s amazing how we responded to each mistake and were able to learn and grow from them… In many respects we took a “fake it ’til you make it” attitude, as the learning curve was so steep.

The staff at Spruce has been the key to our success and we were fortunate to hire some great staff right at the beginning. One of those early hires was Nicole Burns, who is still with Spruce today. She has since taken over as the General Manager, as well as our Manager for Skin Care and Business Development. Back in 2005 she brought some much needed organization to our very green reception desk, which was so important as reception is the nerve centre of our spa.

When we were looking for people to join our team, we always looked for those who would exemplify what Spruce was about. That being said, we did hire several colourful characters in those early years. The ones who were a fit were, of course, terrific and the ones who were not were usually such a challenge. Back then it was difficult dealing with HR issues on top of running a growing spa… Ten years later it has become a little easier.

From Day One, we have always had a clear mission statement and a set of core employee/business values.  We have always strived to set the bar high for professional conduct and costumer service, and create an environment where we respectfully treat each other the way we would want to be treated… These values have been central to our business policy and procedures, leading to much of SBL’s success. I am very proud to say that we still believe and follow those values.

We want to sincerely thank all of our clients who have come through our door and supported us for all these years. We couldn’t have done it without you and we look forward to continuing to serve you for the next 10 years.”

Stay tuned for the next piece on our look back on the past ten years at Spruce Body Lab!
