First Time User Guide: Botox

botox_smAlthough it has been around since the 80’s, Botox is still uncharted territory for many people. It seems like a big step to go from a daily skin care regime and monthly facials to injecting Botulinum Toxin (medical term for Botox). What most people don’t know, is that the Botulinum Toxin was initially used for medical reasons including the treatment of urinary incontinence, muscle spasms, Bell’s palsy, eye problems and more. However, its more commonly used these days as an anti-aging treatment.

Botox injections work by weakening or paralyzing certain muscles or by blocking certain nerves to ultimately reduce the appearance of ageing. The effects last between three to six months, depending on what area you are treating. When it comes to slackening wrinkles and other signs of ageing, Botox is one of the most popular injectable treatments worldwide for a variety of reasons.

The Procedure

If you are interested in getting Botox, let me explain what you are in for. Initially you will meet with one of our doctors to go over the procedure, your target areas and your expected outcomes. During this brief consultation, you will be given a realistic overview of the most likely outcome, the costs, the number of times you will need to return to ensure optimal effects and of course the very unlikely complications that can arise with any treatment.

During your visit, a doctor will administer a small amount of the Botulinum Toxin directly into the facial muscles (that you have previously discussed during your consultation) with a very thin needle. The botox injections work by blocking nerve signals from reaching facial muscles, preventing the muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles in the first place.

Botox is the choice for you if you wish to fend off the visible signs of aging, such as:

  • Frown lines or furrow lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Chin, jaw and neck lines
  • Marionette lines

I’m not sure what could be a better reason for trying botox than the fact that it works- and the results are noticeable. It’s not like the fine print at the bottom of an ad for an anti-aging cream that proclaims that 80% of people perceived that their fine lines and wrinkles were lessened. With botox- its not a matter of subjective microns of change- the lines melt away.

When administered by a doctor, Botox has little to no threats. Botox is well tolerated by most patients with very little recovery time. Few patients will see light bruising and redness that doesn’t last long.

It lasts and it’s affordable. Unlike more drastic measures such as a face lift, there is little to no down-time with botox injections and the cost is considerably more manageable than surgery. Patients generally get anywhere from 10-50 units of botox per treatment and the effects last up to 4 months. When you do the math, that’s anywhere from $300 to $1500 per year to shed aging wrinkles.

Still unsure? Meet with one of our doctors for a complimentary consultation to discuss your treatment options.
