Fall 2011 Skin Care and Make Up Tips

It really isn’t feeling much like fall here in Vancouver- and I think most of us are thankful for that! It’s been a very late summer and there is a general feeling of denial that it is September.

That being said, I am looking forward to wrapping myself up in knits and taking walks along the sea wall with fall leaves crunching underfoot. One of the things I like the most about the seasonal change is that you get to update your look along with it- playing around with different lip stick colours, eye shadows and hair colour. Check out I’m the It Girl, a favorite local blog of mine for the latest fall fashion and beauty tips and trends. I especially like Anya’s recent post about foraging into DIY hair dye- something I may have to consider if I get the urge to go dark again this fall.

One of the challenges we can face with transitioning into the fall and winter looks is prepping our skin for the dramatic, cooler fall colours. The summer sun initially gives our skin a warm glow, but when our tan starts to fade, our skin can look tired and uneven.Crimson lips and metallic/ smoky eyes require radiant and clear skin to carry off. First step- come in for a professional skin care treatment. A thorough and deep exfoliation with a chemical peel or microdermabrasion are great options. If you have more stubborn pigmentation that needs more than a chemical peel to fade- then a few photorejuvenation treatments are in order.

Post professional treatment, your skin has an ideal base from which to work. The next step is to preserve and protect what you’ve achieved. I’m a huge fan of the Colorscience minerals that we’ve carried since 2008 and many of my clients have followed suit- finding that the minerals give their skin a flawless yet natural appearance from which to build their make up look, without compromising the health of their skin.

I liken the minerals to a breathable bandaid for the skin. You can put traditional make up over top of this protective layer to achieve whatever look you’re going for, while trusting that your foundation is giving you an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, moisture binding and oil absorbing base.

While the Sunforgettables were a hit this summer-  fall and winter call for a more refined and look that can be perfectly achieved with a primer, pressed powder and setting mist.

Right now, there is a fantastic promo for a free primer (a $58 value) when you purchase a pressed powder, a sunforgettable and a setting mist.

I’ve always tended towards a more natural look when it comes to make up and have shied away from primers and foundations in the past. In fact, I never really appreciated the point of a primer until I tried the Colorescience primers. If you want to create a truly flawless look and have your minerals last twice as long- then I highly recommend introducing a primer to your regimen. Here’s a before and after picture (of the crook of my thumb) that illustrates how the primer works to fill in lines and enlarged pores- providing an age-defying pallet.

Before Colorescience Primer (note all the lines in the crook of the thumb)

After Colorescience Primer (noticeable reduction in the lines)

It’s a pretty remarkable example of how one quick and easy step can make a big difference on how your makeup sits on your skin. Not sure where to begin when it comes to make up?
