Vancouver Spa Featured Product: A New Year, A New You Through Nutricosmetics

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Detox_L086_8x10_FINALHave you ever done a detox? There seems to be a wide variety of methods available, and it’s being done more commonly. I was privy to witnessing the aftermath of several staff trying the Master Cleanse. I won’t comment on the results, but I can only state that for me, only taking in a liquid concoction for days on end, is not something I could do, or want to do!

I do however think that doing a periodic seasonal detox is healthy. I’ve personally tried the Wild Rose Cleanse twice. The first time I did it, I cheated quite a bit and didn’t really see the full benefits. The second time I did it, I met with greater success. I really noticed a difference in how I felt. My eyes were clearer, I had better energy and I felt lighter. Unfortunately, I celebrated a little to intensely after finishing that cleanse, undoubtedly undoing the restoration of my organs!

In spite of this, I think that I’ve benefited greatly from the experience of changing my eating habits and learning to appreciate food for it’s nutritive quality, rather than it’s satiating character. From having to abstain from things like sugar and flour for a few weeks, I learned that I could indeed live without it and eating becomes more of a choice rather than an urge.

That being said, I think that making big changes in diet doesn’t come easy- and the more supportive a detox can be, the better.

I’ve become a big fan of the GliSODin Advanced Detoxification Formula which has a less extreme approach to detoxification. You simply drink a sachet of the formula twice a day, once in the morning, 30 minutes before breakfast and then at night before going to bed. There is a diet plan that you can choose to follow, but its a suggestion rather than a rule. The formula will still aid in detoxification, even if you’re still eating cheeseburgers.

Along with the potent antioxidant qualities of GliSODin, the formula uses berries and chardonnay grapes which provide a full-spectrum of nutritious antioxidants for optimal health and radiant skin; alpha lipoic acid to chelate heavy metals and neutralize several types of free radicals; milk thistle which contains a mixture of flavanoid complexes that protects and promotes liver cleansing; nutraflora (sc-FOS) as an excellent source of soluble fibre to aid in digestion and elimination which assists in weight loss; and finally broccoli, which is high in sulforaphane that induces phase II detoxification enzymes for enhanced cleansing.

No running to the bathroom with this cleanse- thankfully! So if you’re looking for a fresh start to the new year, why not cleanse your system and give your organs a helping hand?

You can learn more about detoxification at our upcoming Whole Health Event, February 4th. Stay tuned for more details. For a direct email invitation, join our mailing list or facebook group page.

Vancouver Spa – Spruce Body Lab News: Cupping

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Our resident Acupuncturist and doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mahsa Ahmadi had a great feature in Vitamin V for Cosmetic Acupuncture. Click here to read more. Mahsa is now offering cupping with her practice here at Spruce Body Lab. So if you want to bring your health regimen to another level and join the ranks of Gwyneth Paltrow and Britney Spears (both have been seen sporting cupping induced circles on their bared backs…) , go to our acupuncture page and learn more about this ancient therapy.

Personal Experience

I recently came down with a cold that I thought that I had beat, but has subsequently been beating me; I’ve gradually felt worse each day.  I’m not one to take a cold lying down, so I thought I’d try some acupuncture and cupping to see if it could help.

I have to admit that I was a little concerned about the cupping. Would it be really hot? Would I have frightening bruises all over my back? My fears were soon laid to rest as the cups were applied to my back like little suction vacuums and moved along my spine. The first application of the cups didn’t feel warm, the second felt a little more intense, both in temperature and the intensity of the suction action.  I didn’t have any discomfort, in fact, it felt good. I would liken it to the feeling of fascial work with massage therapy.

As an unfortunate side effect of sneezing in the midst of this cold, I had tweaked my neck and shoulder, which happens to me, off an on. I usually seek out massage therapy to treat this when it happens, The cupping really helped and I didn’t feel any more aches and pains in my shoulder afterwards.

During my acupuncture treatment, Dr. Ahmadi placed two needles on either side of my nostrils to help relieve congestion in my sinuses. It helped considerably, and while I still have my cold, I’ve been breathing through my nose quite comfortably since my treatment.

My concern with the bruising that arises from cupping did come to fruition. I was a bit startled when I noticed the circular patches of burst blood vessels. Most of them were faint, but I had one that was more defined and noticeable.  After I saw them once, I forgot about them, as they didn’t cause me any discomfort. The verdict: I’m not going to be doing cupping during bikini season, but it’s still on my list of remedies for pain relief.

Overall, I’m ecstatic that I can turn to acupuncture and cupping to boost my body’s ability to heal and recover and hopefully this cold has seen it’s last days!

Vancouver Spa: Internal Supplements, Can They Improve Your Skin?

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

There’s so many conflicting opinions about whether what we eat influences our outward appearance. In my experience it differs for everyone due to genetics and environmental influences.  For some people, food sensitivities can have a huge influence on the appearance of their skin- something as minor as taking a bite of cheesecake can cause an eruption that may takes days or weeks to go away.

For others, diet does not have such an obvious influence on their skin, but over time, the aging process can be accelerated if proper diet, lifestyle and exercise haven’t been made a priority.  This is because, our skin is our largest organ, and it receives it’s nutrients from the blood stream.  If we’re not giving our body plenty of nutrients to draw from, our skin suffers the consequences as it subsists on the leftovers from the internal organs.

Of course supplements are nothing new.  People have been taking gingko biloba, echinacea, fish oils and many other herbal and dietary supplements to improve their health. However, the recent trend is in vitamin drinks, potent anti-oxidant and mineral rich cocktails as well as omega oil and enzyme supplements directly marketed to prevent aging of the skin and body.

What it comes down to is whether or not your diet supports your optimal health and for most people, it’s hard to get the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables which contain the nutrients we need.

Introducing a supplement into your daily routine can help support your body’s ability to cope with stress and free radical damage, thus slowing down the aging process.

We recently brought in a product called GliSODin which is researched and developed by a dermatologist and nutritionists. The key ingredient for this line of supplements is superoxide-dismutase.  This enzyme can be found in the most luxurious of skin creams on the market for it’s potent anti-free radical properties.  SOD is actually produced by our body naturally, but as we age we don’t create as much of it to battle free-radical damage.  GliSODin has taken SOD from melon and wrapped it in a protein sheath to ensure that it is protected from the stomach acids which would normally break down the SOD enzyme, rendering it inactive by the time it reaches the small intestine.  This biotechnology, along with therapeutic dosages of bioactive ingredients, allows our body to absorb the supplement properly and use it to significantly reduce inflammation and free-radical damage which are two of the main triggers of aging.

I’m personally very excited to offer this product to my clients here at Spruce Body Lab.  Not only am I able to help them feel and look their best from an external perspective, but now I can boost their internal wellness as well.  This is something I’ve always felt to be a non-negotiable with regards to beauty.  If you’re not right on the inside, it will reflect on the outside.

One of our staff members has had tremendous result from using the Brightening Formula from GliSODin to treat post-inflammatory pigmentation.  For me, seeing is believing and the results that my co-worker had were incredible. Uneven skin tone can cause a lot of self-consciousness for people and by simply taking two tablets a day for a month, this concern was greatly improved; all the while supporting the organs and functions of the entire body.

Here’s a great blog review of these products by Carmindy from TLC’s “What Not To Wear”.
